Golfers Toe Injury Leaves Sentry Participation
Norwegian golf sensation Viktor Hovland remains uncertain to play in The Sentry at Kapalua, the opening event of this season’s PGA Tour, due to a fractured toe. The incident occurred in his hotel room in Hawaii when Hovland, just after arriving from Norway post-Christmas, accidentally kicked the bed’s corner. Despite the pain, he shared an X-ray of his injury on Instagram, indicating his mishap humorously.
In a recent interview with Norsk Golf, Hovland revealed that he has once again parted ways with his swing coach Joe Mayo. This marks the second time the pair have separated in roughly a year. After initially splitting in late 2023 and experimenting with other coaches, Hovland briefly reunited with Mayo in spring 2024. About a month ago, however, he decided to end their collaboration again, citing differences in their visions for his development. Hovland expressed a newfound confidence in managing his swing independently, stating, “I am the boss of my own swing,” though he continues to consult with another coach occasionally.
Despite the toe injury, which typically requires four to six weeks to heal, Hovland has not yet withdrawn from the tournament. He has been practicing lightly, hitting balls without shoes to avoid straining his injured foot, and notes a significant improvement in his condition. Hovland remains on the starting list for The Sentry and will make his final participation decision by Thursday.

The tournament has already seen the withdrawal of World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who injured his hand in a cooking accident during Christmas, adding to the unusual pre-tournament developments.
