Sir, you are a regular golfer at Kurmitola Golf Club. How has the club shaped your golfing journey over the years?

Kurmitola Golf Club has been a true source of inspiration in my golfing journey. It has been like a second home to me. It has not only enhanced my skills on the course but also provided me with a community that embodies discipline, camaraderie and mutual respect. The serene environment of the club offers a welcome balance to my professional responsibilities, allowing me to reflect and recharge. Over the years, Kurmitola has helped me grow as a golfer and more importantly, as an individual who values patience, focus and perseverance—qualities that resonate both in golf and in life.

As Patron of Shaheen Golf and Country Club, how impressed are you with its course and facilities and what future do you envision for it?

Shaheen Golf and Country Club is a wonderful facility that has been growing steadily. I am deeply impressed with its layout, greenery and commitment to nurturing golfers of all ages. My vision is to see it emerge as a premier golfing destination that not only advances the sport but also promotes recreation and community engagement for families and enthusiasts alike.

The incoming Air Force Golf Link in Dhaka is an exciting project. Could you share your vision for this new course?

This project is very close to my heart. I envision the Air Force Golf Link as a modern, world-class golfing facility that not only meets international standards but also provides a welcoming space for our officers, their families and the wider community to connect over the game. More importantly, it will serve as a platform to inspire and introduce young people to golf, fostering the growth of the sport and cultivating a lasting culture of excellence in Bangladesh.

I see a very promising future for golf in Bangladesh. With increasing participation, expanding facilities, and growing international exposure, the sport has the potential to establish Bangladesh on the global golfing map.

How do you balance your demanding responsibilities as Air Chief with your passion for golf?

Maintaining balance requires discipline, focus and careful prioritization. My responsibilities as Air Chief remain my foremost priority, yet golf provides a meaningful avenue to refresh my mind, maintain physical well-being and cultivate patience and concentration. It is more than a recreational pursuit—it allows me to return to my professional responsibilities with renewed clarity, perspective and energy. However, under the current circumstances, it is often challenging to find the right balance.

Golf is often seen as a quiet, patient game, while flying and leading the Air Force demand adrenaline and speed. How do these contrast aspects complement each other in your life?

At first glance, they may seem opposite, but in reality, they complement each other profoundly. Flying demands quick reflexes, precision and decisive action, while golf fosters patience, focus and composure. Together, they provide balance—reinforcing that effective leadership requires both agility in decision-making and calmness in execution.

Can you tell us about your very first golfing experience?

I still vividly remember my first swing—it was far from perfect! What struck me most, however, was the profound sense of calm and focus that the course inspired. From that very first experience, I realized that golf is more than a sport; it is a journey of self-discipline, reflection and continuous personal improvement. Even though I had a few lessons and swings at Jashore Golf and Country Club (JGCC) in the mid-1990s, my actual lessons with regular practice started when I went to Shaheen Golf and Country Club Patenga (SGCCP), Chattogram, in the late 2000s.

Before golf, were you involved in other sports and how did they shape your discipline?

I see a very promising future for golf in Bangladesh. With increasing participation, expanding facilities, and growing international exposure, the sport has the potential to establish Bangladesh on the global golfing map.

Yes, I used to love playing Basketball, Cricket and Tennis, which instilled in me a strong sense of discipline, teamwork and physical endurance. Golf later refined these qualities, teaching patience, mental focus and the ability to approach challenges with composure and grace. Together, these experiences have shaped not only my sporting journey but also my approach to leadership and life.

What is your favorite golfing destination—both within Bangladesh and abroad?

I enjoy golfing at all the clubs in Bangladesh. However, Kurmitola Golf Club holds a special place for me, not only for its rich history but also for the serenity and camaraderie it offers. Abroad, I have particularly enjoyed courses in Pakistan and Hawaii, where the natural landscapes and thoughtful design make the experience truly memorable. Each destination offers its own lessons and pleasures, enriching both my appreciation of the game and my personal journey as a golfer.

Do you have a favorite professional golfer you admire?

Yes, I greatly admire legends like Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros and many more. However, Tiger Woods remains as an idol not only for his extraordinary achievements in sports but also for the resilience and determination he has shown throughout his career. His journey exemplifies that true excellence arises from a combination of talent, perseverance and character—qualities that inspire both in sport and in life.

What is it about this game that attracts you most—the challenge, the serenity or the fellowship?

All three aspects are important in golf but what I value most is its serenity. The course gives me space to reflect, stay focused and recharge while also testing my skills and concentration. Just as important is the fellowship it creates—built on respect, friendship and shared passion. The best part is that you compete with yourself.

Could you share a most memorable experience—or even a nightmare—you have faced on the golf course?

Some of my most memorable experiences on the golf course include learning to play in the rain with gumboots on, which taught me patience and adaptability. Another memorable experience was winning my first trophy, a milestone that remains very special. Seeing my handicap come down as low as 11 is yet another significant experience for me, though I haven’t reached a single-digit handicap yet—a goal that continues to drive me to play golf. Perhaps my most nightmarish moment was hitting the flagpoles on the green several times, yet narrowly missing a hole-in-one. Each of these experiences, both rewarding and challenging, has reinforced the lessons of focus, perseverance and personal growth that golf consistently offers.

We understand your son also plays golf. How does it feel to share this game as a family and do you play together often?

It is truly a blessing to share this passion with my son Sameer Hasan Khan. Golf gives us the chance to strengthen our bond and create lasting memories together.

Do you believe golf can help build stronger family bonds across generations?

GOLF & NATIONAL

From your perspective, what role can golf play in shaping discipline, leadership and focus among today’s youth?

Golf is more than a sport; it is a way of life that cultivates discipline, patience and integrity. The game demands concentration, emotional control and respect for both the rules and fellow players—qualities that translate directly into effective leadership and responsible citizenship. For today’s youth, golf provides a unique platform to develop focus, sound decision-making and perseverance, while fostering a culture of ethical conduct and personal growth.

Bangladesh golf is developing rapidly. How do you see its future in the next decade?

I see a very promising future for golf in Bangladesh. With increasing participation, expanding facilities, and growing international exposure, the sport has the potential to establish Bangladesh on the global golfing map. Over the next decade, I am confident we will witness the rise of talented young golfers who can represent our nation with pride like Siddikur Rahman. Beyond competition, golf will continue to serve as a bridge for international friendship, diplomacy and economic development through sports tourism.

How can the media—and TheGolfHouse in particular—play a stronger role in promoting local golf to both domestic and international audiences?

The media plays a vital role in shaping perceptions and inspiring participation. TheGolfHouse has already made commendable contributions by chronicling the development of golf in Bangladesh. Moving forward, it can further amplify the stories of emerging golfers, showcase the achievements of our professionals abroad and raise awareness about the accessibility of golf for all. By connecting with both domestic and international audiences, the magazine can act as a strong ambassador for Bangladesh golf, helping to strengthen its identity and recognition on the global stage.

LEADERSHIP & LIFE LESSONS

In your own journey to becoming Air Chief, do you believe leadership qualities are innate or developed through training and discipline?

Leadership is a combination of both. While some individuals may have natural inclinations, true leadership is cultivated through rigorous training, discipline and continuous learning. Throughout my career, I have found that resilience, empathy and sound decision-making are honed through experience and mentorship. It is through steadfast commitment and disciplined practice that leadership potential is transformed into effective action.

What advice would you give to young officers in the Air Force who aspire to leadership?

My advice would be to lead by example. Integrity, professionalism and dedication to service must be the cornerstones of an officer’s character. Young officers should embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, remain humble in success and consistently prioritize the interests of the nation above personal gain. True leadership is not defined by authority, but by responsibility, service and the ability to inspire others through one’s actions.

What does success mean to you both in your career and in golf?

For me, success is not measured by position or personal accolades, but by the positive impact one leaves on others. In my career, it means strengthening Bangladesh Air Force, mentoring and nurturing future leaders and contributing to the security and development of Bangladesh. In golf, success is found in playing with honesty, sportsmanship and camaraderie—values that enrich both the individual and the wider community. Golf has also given me the opportunity to make acquaintances and friends from different walks of life.

If you could share one life lesson with the next generation of Bangladeshis, what would it be?

The most important life lesson I would share is that integrity forms the foundation of lasting success. Whatever path you choose—be it in the armed forces, sports, or civil society—uphold honesty, discipline and service to others. These values not only shape your character but also contribute to building a stronger, more prosperous Bangladesh.

TheGolfHouse, the country’s first-ever golf magazine, is approaching its 10-year milestone. What message would you like to share with our readers and the wider golf community?

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to TheGolfHouse on reaching this remarkable milestone. Over the past decade, the magazine has served as a beacon for golfers in Bangladesh and as a vital platform to document and promote the growth of the sport. I encourage the entire golfing community to continue supporting such initiatives, which inspire participation, foster excellence and strengthen Bangladesh’s connection with the global golfing fraternity.

Finally, our tagline states: “Golf for All.” How do you see this vision unfolding in Bangladesh and what steps do you think are needed to make the game more accessible to people from all walks of life?

“Golf for All” is a truly inspiring vision and I believe it is both possible and essential for the future of the sport in Bangladesh. Realizing this vision will require expanding infrastructure, introducing affordable training programs and creating opportunities for youth from diverse backgrounds to engage with golf. Schools and universities can play a vital role by integrating golf into their extracurricular activities. With collective effort and dedication, golf can become a unifying sport that brings people together from all walks of life across Bangladesh.
