Luke Donald, European Ryder Cup Captain, engaged with local school children in Limerick during his first official visit to the 2027 host venue, Adare Manor, reinforcing the championship’s long-term vision of community impact and youth development.
Accompanied by his wife Diane, Donald visited the indoor training facility at Our Lady’s Abbey Primary School, where students from multiple local schools—including St Nicholas, Shountrade, and Scoil Naomh Iosaf—joined a dedicated golf session. Around 20 children aged between nine and 12 participated in interactive activities such as mini-putting, chipping challenges, and skill-based games, conducted under the guidance of Golf Ireland Limerick Development Officers. The initiative aligns with the ongoing ‘Unleash Your Drive’ primary school golf programme, which is already active in select schools and set to expand further across the region.

The visit also saw the presence of key stakeholders, including Ireland’s Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport Patrick O’Donovan, Adare Manor owner JP McManus, and European Tour Group Chief Executive Guy Kinnings, highlighting the broader institutional commitment behind the Ryder Cup’s legacy planning. As part of the engagement, participating students received commemorative Ryder Cup gift bags, adding to the growing excitement ahead of the prestigious team event scheduled from September 13–19, 2027, marking its debut in Limerick.
Speaking during the visit, Donald emphasised the importance of inspiring the next generation, noting that exposure to global sporting events can shape future ambitions. He underlined the Ryder Cup’s unique ability to connect with local communities and create lasting impact beyond the competition itself. Minister O’Donovan echoed this sentiment, confirming government-backed initiatives aimed at expanding grassroots access to golf, including the recruitment of community golf officers and the development of short-form golf facilities nationwide.
Donald’s visit forms part of a broader inspection and preparation tour of Adare Manor, where he was joined by Vice-Captain Edoardo Molinari to review course conditions and team infrastructure. Having previously led Europe to victories in Rome in 2023 and New York in 2025, Donald expressed confidence that the 2027 edition in Ireland will set new standards for the Ryder Cup experience, with strong backing from host stakeholders and a clear focus on both elite performance and community legacy.
