Akbar Hossain made an impressive start to the 4th Western Group Professional Golf Tournament 2026, carding a six-under-par opening round to take a one-stroke lead at Army Golf Club in Dhaka.
The three-day tournament, organised under the Bangladesh Professional Golfers’ Association (BPGA), began on October 27 and is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, bringing together several of the country’s leading professional golfers.
Badal Hossain emerged as Akbar’s closest challenger after returning a five-under-par score, while Jamal Hossain occupied third place at three-under-par.
Bangladesh’s most internationally recognised professional golfer, Siddikur Rahman, shared fourth position at two-under-par alongside Sazib Ali and Md Razu, leaving the competition closely contested after the opening round.
Akbar’s performance underlined his growing consistency on the domestic professional circuit. The golfer had finished runner-up at the 2nd CAS Cup Professional Golf Tournament at Kurmitola Golf Club in September, where Siddikur claimed the title with a 14-under-par total of 202.
Having finished five strokes behind Siddikur on that occasion, Akbar entered the Western Group tournament with another opportunity to challenge for a title.
Jamal, Badal and Siddikur were also expected to provide stiff competition as the tournament progressed.
The event comes at an important time for professional golf in Bangladesh, with the BPGA working to strengthen its domestic tournament calendar and create more competitive opportunities for local professionals.
Under its current leadership, the association has emphasised the importance of regular competitions, structured player development and greater participation in international tournaments.
For Bangladesh’s professional golfers, tournaments such as the Western Group Open provide opportunities to sharpen their competitive skills, maintain consistency and prepare for competitions beyond the domestic circuit.
Corporate support remains equally important to the sport’s development. Western Group’s involvement reflects the contribution of private-sector organisations towards sustaining professional tournaments and providing golfers with a competitive platform.
Army Golf Club, which has hosted several professional and amateur competitions, is staging the tournament over three days.
With only four strokes separating the leading six players after the opening round, the competition remains open as the golfers battle for the title.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude on October 29, with the final results expected to determine whether Akbar can turn his promising opening performance into a victory or whether one of his closest rivals can claim the championship.
