The R&A Reschedules 2028 Major Championships to Avoid Olympic Clash

The R&A has officially confirmed that three of its major championships in 2028 will be pushed back to avoid overlapping with the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The 2028 Summer Olympics will run from 14–30 July, with the golf competitions scheduled between 19–29 July. To ensure clear space on the global calendar, The R&A has moved the traditional July dates of its flagship events.

As a result, the 156th Open Championship will now take place in the first week of August 2028. The AIG Women’s Open has been rescheduled for 7–13 August, while the ISPS HANDA Senior Open will follow a week later from 14–20 August.

Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, said the decision was taken after extensive consultation with key stakeholders. He noted that the early confirmation of revised dates will help all tours and partners plan effectively for the 2028 season. He also confirmed that The Open will return to its traditional mid-July slot from 2029 onwards.

Golf last made its Olympic return at the 2016 Rio Games after a 112-year absence. The 2028 Olympic golf competitions will be staged at the iconic Riviera Country Club and will also introduce a mixed men’s and women’s team event for the first time adding a new competitive dimension to the Olympic golf program.

This strategic rescheduling ensures that both the Olympic Games and golf’s historic major championships receive their own uninterrupted spotlight in a landmark sporting summer.
