Bernd Wiesberger delivered a composed and resilient performance to secure a long-awaited return to winning ways at the Volvo China Open 2026, closing with a decisive three-shot victory in Shanghai.
Starting the final round one shot behind, Wiesberger produced a measured 67 to finish at 19 under par at Enhance Anting Golf Club, marking his ninth career title on the DP World Tour and his first since 2021.
The contest evolved into a compelling duel with overnight leader Adrian Otaegui, who appeared in control after turning three shots clear. However, momentum shifted dramatically on the back nine. Wiesberger ignited his charge with three birdies in four holes, highlighted by a pivotal chip-in at the 10th that redefined the contest.
Maintaining pressure throughout, the Austrian seized the outright lead at the 16th as Otaegui faltered, eventually closing with a costly double bogey on the 18th to finish at 16 under. Wiesberger, by contrast, held firm under pressure, calmly two-putting for par to complete a significant comeback after a 1,792-day winless stretch.
Sweden’s Mikael Lindberg secured solo third at 14 under following a final-round 67, while South Africa’s Shaun Norris finished fourth, one shot further back. Germany’s Freddy Schott delivered the lowest round of the day with a 64 to claim fifth place at 12 under.
Reflecting on his victory, Wiesberger acknowledged the significance of the moment after a challenging period. He noted that persistence and belief played a decisive role, particularly during a crucial stretch on the back nine where key putts and recovery shots maintained his momentum. The turning point, he indicated, came around the 10th hole, setting the tone for a decisive final hour.
He also emphasised the broader impact of the win, highlighting renewed access to elite tournaments, including Rolex Series events, which could shape the trajectory of his next competitive cycle.
Defending champion Ashun Wu, who finished further down the leaderboard, praised the event’s enduring legacy. He underscored its importance in developing Chinese golf, noting that the tournament continues to provide a vital platform for local players to benchmark themselves against international competition and progress onto the global stage.
The 2026 edition once again reinforced the Volvo China Open’s role as a cornerstone event in Asian golf, blending competitive excellence with meaningful pathways for emerging talent.
