My dream is to play European Tour one day

When did you start playing golf and with which club?

I started playing golf in 2012 at the Mainamati Golf and Country Club.

What are you golfing achievements so far?

I have won 10 to 12 trophies so far.

How are you preparing yourself for the future challenges?

I prepare myself in a way so that I can win every event. My dream is to play European Tour one day.

Who do you have in your family?

 

I have my mother, my sister, my younger brother. I have two elder brothers who live separately.

Does your family encourage you to play golf?

Yes, my mother gives me a lot of encouragement. My younger brother, too, gives me support.

Who or what inspired you to become a golfer?

To be honest, Siddikur Rahman is our idol and inspiration. We all want to be like him, want to reach a stage which he reached.

Who is your international golfing idol?

I like Rory McIlroy a lot.

What aspects of Siddikur do you follow?

I follow his swing, his movements, his demeanour during the game. I also try to follow a routine like his.

I, on behalf of all five of us, thank bti so very much. bti is encouraging us to continue playing golf and giving us the support so that we can do well.

 Do you have a message for youngsters?

I would request them to start learning golf from a good trainer. If it’s an academy, then even better. If they want to take golf as a career, they should focus only on golf and nothing else.

When did you start playing golf and with which club?

I started playing in 2014 at the Army Golf Club.

How are you preparing yourself for the future challenges?

I am training hard and preparing myself for future. I’m trying to do well.

What are you golfing achievements so far?

I have finished best runner-up in two PST tournaments in Chattogram in 2016 and 2017. I won a best-day award in an event in Malaysia. I also became runner-up in Faldo Series. Apart from these, I won a couple of tournaments in our locality.

Who do you have in your family?

I have my mother, father, a brother and a sister.

Does your family encourage you to play golf?

My father supports me the most. I feel inspired by the good players in Bangladesh. I want to be like them.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to participate in good Indian Tours and end with a good ranking in Asian Tour events in Bangladesh.

Who is your golfing idol?

Definitely Siddikur Rahman among the Bangladeshis. And Rory McIlroy on the PGA Tour.

What aspects of their game do you follow?

Siddikur bhai has worked so hard to come this far. He has devoted so much time to this game. I want to show that dedication and hard work too.

All five of us feel grateful to bti for sponsoring us. If other companies come forward like that we will definitely go a long way. Since we are not from well-off families, we need that financial support.

What should a young golf enthusiast do?

He or she must learn it from a good trainer because one cannot learn golf on his own. There are many good trainers in Bangladesh.

My target is to be on the European Tour within the next five years

Mohammad Samrat Sikder, Age: 23, Home :Jessore

When did you start playing golf and with which club?

I started playing at the Jessore Golf Club in 2008. I participated in the Junior Open in 2014 where I won two trophies including one for best net score. It was after that that I regularly started playing.

What are you golfing achievements so far?

I have won a few BPGA tournaments. I have won overall 16 titles so far, including three the current year. I won five last year. I finished second in the year-end BPGA ranking for the last two years.

How are you preparing yourself for the future challenges?

I am training hard and focusing on my fitness too. I went to Singapore for a training course, where they gave us a planning schedule on how to train and how to maintain fitness.

Who do you have in your family?

I have my mother, father, two sisters and a brother.

Does your family encourage you to play golf?

Yes, they are very supportive of my golfing. Initially my father gave me money to buy an iron suit when I used to play with a stick. He also bought me a driver and other things.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

My target is to be on the European Tour within the next five years.

Who is your golfing idol?

Definitely Siddikur Rahman among the Bangladeshis. And Rory McIlroy on the PGA Tour.

What aspects of their game do you follow?

I follow their chipping, putting, driving, etc.

bti has sponsored me before. They have increased our salary too. Hopefully we can repay the company’s faith.

Do you have a message for youngsters who want to play golf?

Best if they can come through an academy. Otherwise they should go to a trainer to learn the basic skills so that the game becomes easier for them.

My dream is to be a great golfer

Mohammad Shafiq Bagha, Age:23, Home: Hijla Barishal

 When did you start playing golf and with which club?

I started playing golf in 2013 at the Kurmitola Golf Club.

What are you golfing achievements so far?

I have done very well in BPGA and amateur circuit. We won team title in amateur championship.

How are you preparing yourself for the future challenges?

My dream is to be a great golfer. I want to play in Major tournaments. I want to be like Siddikur Rahman or even do better than him.

Who do you have in your family?

I have my mother, father, three sisters and a brother.

Does your family encourage you to play golf?

My elder brother, Mohammad Selim, encourages and supports me a lot. He brought me here.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to be a regular at the Asian Tour in five years. I want to be among the best there and I have the confidence.

Who is your golfing idol?

Since I came here, Siddikur Rahman became my idol. I have followed him closely, watching him train in morning and afternoon. Among international stars, I like Jordan Spieth a lot.

I am grateful to bti for sponsoring the five national team players. If other companies follow their suit, we will do a lot better and there will be 10 Siddikur Rahmans in our country. Cricket, football have big sponsors; we need that sort of sponsorship in golf too.

What should a young golf enthusiast do?

Any youngster should learn it from a good trainer because one cannot learn golf on his own. Even if he goes to an academy, he should have a personal trainer.

If someone wants to do well as a golfer, he should work with pros. You learn through working with the pros and that’s how I think a golfer should learn.

Mohammad Sumon , Age: 29, Home: Narayanganj

did you start playing golf and with which club?

I started with the Army Golf Club. Then I qualified for the national team three years ago and came to Kurmitola Golf Club.

What are you golfing achievements so far?

I have won eight trophies so far. Among those, I have won one championship, finished second in three and finished third in one. I finished third in Orion event in 2017, finished second in Nepal, third in Iran and third in Sri Lanka too.

How are you preparing yourself for the future challenges?

I am working hard and giving my best to make my dream and my desire come true.

Who do you have in your family?

I only have my mother in my family. My father passed away before my birth.

How did you come to golf?

One of my uncles brought me to the golf club. I used to work as a ball boy. Seeing the pros play, I harboured this dream of becoming a golfer myself.

Who inspired you most in golf?

In the Army Golf Club, there was a pro named Quadir. I worked with him from my beginning. He helped me a lot with money and instruments.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

If I can give my best, I can be among top five golfers in the country in five years’ time.

Who is your golfing idol? If someone wants to do well as a golfer, he should work with pros?

I follow Jamal bhai, Siddik bhai, Dulal bhai, Sajib etc. Among the foreigners, I like Rashid Khan, Mithun Perera.

I wholeheartedly thank bti for sponsoring us because there was no one else to help us. I thank bti for returning to sponsoring us again. You cannot survive on 1500-2000 taka while playing for the national team. So I thank bti for meeting our financial needs.

What should a young golf enthusiast do?

If someone wants to do well as a golfer, he should work with pros. You learn through working with the pros and that’s how I think a golfer should learn.
