Michael Thorbjornsen captured the first PGA TOUR title of his career with a brilliant bogey-free final-round 63 to win the 2026 Rocket Classic by two strokes at Detroit Golf Club on Sunday.
The 24-year-old American began the final round three shots behind overnight leader Davis Riley but surged through the field with a composed display of ball-striking and clutch putting. Thorbjornsen finished the tournament at 18-under-par, sealing victory with a spectacular 26-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole.
“Perfect pace, perfect read,” Thorbjornsen said after holing the winning putt. The victory marks his maiden PGA TOUR triumph and makes him the eighth first-time winner on Tour this season.
Olympic champion Xander Schauffele produced a closing 65 to finish runner-up at 16-under, while overnight leader Davis Riley slipped to third after a final-round 70 that included four bogeys.
Thorbjornsen seized control of the tournament on the back nine, making four birdies over a six-hole stretch before confidently rolling in the decisive birdie on the final green. His closing round was bogey-free despite changing weather conditions that troubled many of the leading contenders.
The victory also secured Thorbjornsen a place in the FedExCup Playoffs, with the American moving safely inside the top 70 ahead of the regular-season finale at the Wyndham Championship.
A former U.S. Junior Amateur champion and Stanford standout, Thorbjornsen earned his PGA TOUR card after finishing No. 1 in the PGA TOUR University rankings in 2024. His breakthrough victory is expected to be a significant milestone in the young American’s career as he heads into the FedExCup Playoffs with renewed confidence.
