South Africa is set to host the Icons Cup for the first time as the prestigious International golf event makes its African debut at The Links at Fancourt from December 11 to 13, 2026.
The three-day tournament will feature 28 globally renowned former sports stars, who will compete in a match-play golf format after making their names in cricket, football, rugby and other major sports.
Four-time Major champion Ernie Els will captain Team South Africa, while Team World will be led by two-time Masters champion and Ryder Cup legend José MarÃa Olazábal.
Organisers have also announced the first group of confirmed participants, including former South Africa cricket captain AB de Villiers, Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok Fourie du Preez, West Indies batting great Brian Lara, and former Chelsea and England captain John Terry.
De Villiers, an avid golfer who plays off a 2.3 handicap, is expected to be among the standout competitors, while Terry and Lara are also well known for their passion for the game.
The event marks a significant milestone for the Icons Series, which has chosen South Africa as its first African destination. Organisers believe the tournament will not only showcase elite sporting personalities in a new competitive setting but also highlight the Western Cape and the Garden Route as leading international golf and tourism destinations.
The remaining 24 players in the 28-member field will be announced over the coming weeks ahead of the December event.
The Icons Cup has gained international recognition by bringing together legendary athletes from different sports to compete in a team-based golf contest, offering fans a unique blend of competition and entertainment.
