The victorious Kurmitola Golf Club team celebrates in unison after winning the Team Winner title at the 28th Challenge Cup 2025, showcasing unity, pride, and the true spirit of the game.
Dhaka, April 18, 2025 — Kurmitola Golf Club (KGC) clinched its third consecutive title at the 28th edition of the Challenge Cup, a prestigious inter-club golf tournament held yesterday at its home course in Dhaka.
Often referred to as the “Ryder Cup of Bangladesh,” the annual event is one of the most anticipated fixtures on the country’s amateur golf calendar. It showcases a long-standing and spirited rivalry between two of the nation’s most distinguished clubs—Kurmitola Golf Club and Bhatiyari Golf & Country Club (BGCC).
Now in its 28th year, the Challenge Cup remains the oldest inter-club competition in Bangladesh, serving as a platform where legacy, pride, and sportsmanship converge. The latest edition featured some of the country’s most prominent golfers, including Maj Gen Sheikh Muhammad Monirul Islam (Retd), Salman Ispahani, Brig Gen Md Amin Tarique (Retd), Arshi Haider, Liakat Ali Chowdhury, Maj Gen Masud Razzaq (Retd), Tutul Chowdhury, Muzahid Bag, Brig Gen Ahsanul Haque Mia (Retd), Maj Emdad (Retd), Muswat Zaidee, Brig Gen Altaf, Col S M Sazzad Hossain, Col Imtiaz, Col Md Shahidul Haque (Retd), Lt Col Shahid Mostafa (Retd), Lt Col Anwar Hossain (Retd), Lt Col Aziz (Retd), Maj Arman (Retd), Maj Yusuf (Retd), Maj Shahjahan (Retd).
Each participant demonstrated remarkable precision and competitive spirit, contributing to a fiercely contested tournament that once again captured the enthusiasm of both clubs’ members.
The intensity of the competition also placed significant pressure on tournament officials. “I have officiated in over 100 tournaments both locally and abroad, but the energy and scrutiny during the Challenge Cup are unmatched,” said a senior rules official. “Every ruling was closely observed, and the use of digital rulebooks, DMD trackers, and speed guns became essential to maintaining fairness.”
The day concluded with a prize distribution ceremony attended by Lieutenant General Mohammad Shaheenul Haque, Senior Vice President of the Bangladesh Golf Federation (BGF), who served as chief guest. In his remarks, he commended the players for their discipline and sportsmanship, and highlighted the tournament’s role in elevating amateur golf in the country.
Kurmitola’s continued dominance in the Challenge Cup reinforces its stature within Bangladesh’s golfing landscape. Yet, it is the enduring rivalry and the deep camaraderie between the clubs that remain at the heart of this celebrated tournament.
