Morikawa Holds Nerve to Edge Scheffler in Pebble Beach Thriller

Collin Morikawa withstood a dramatic final-round charge from world number one Scottie Scheffler to secure a hard-fought one-shot victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, claiming his first PGA TOUR title in more than two years.

Beginning Sunday two shots behind overnight leader Akshay Bhatia at Pebble Beach Golf Links, the two-time major champion made a steady rather than spectacular start. As others surged, Morikawa briefly appeared in danger of losing ground in a tightly packed leaderboard.

Scheffler, starting the day eight shots adrift, mounted a remarkable comeback. A scintillating nine-under-par 63, the lowest round of the day saw him post 20-under and seize the clubhouse lead, threatening a historic rally.

Morikawa responded through the middle stretch, climbing to 22-under with successive birdies on the 15th and 16th. Yet the closing stages delivered further drama. Australia’s Min Woo Lee surged with four birdies in six holes to set a target at 21-under, while Austria’s Sepp Straka holed an eagle at the final hole to match that mark and intensify the pressure.

A bogey at the 17th briefly pulled Morikawa back into a tie, setting up a tense finish. Displaying composure under pressure, he delivered when it mattered most, converting a clutch birdie on the 18th to card a five-under 67 and complete the week at 22-under-par.

The victory marks Morikawa’s first PGA TOUR win since the 2023 ZOZO Championship and lifts him to fifth in the Official World Golf Rankings. Reflecting on the triumph, he credited persistence, belief and the support of his inner circle as decisive factors in his return to the winner’s circle.

Elsewhere, England’s Tommy Fleetwood joined Scheffler at 20-under following a closing 66, while Sam Burns and Bhatia shared sixth at 19-under. Defending champion Rory McIlroy produced one of the standout rounds of the day with an eight-under 64 to finish tied 14th.

The season’s first signature event delivered a fitting showcase of elite competition, culminating in a champion’s response under the most exacting Sunday pressure.
