Jordan Smith Secures U.S. Open Spot at Walton Heath Qualifier

Jordan Smith from England clinched his place in the 2025 U.S. Open after topping the Final Qualifying at Walton Heath Golf Club. Smith posted rounds of 64 and 70 to finish at 10-under par, earning a return to the U.S. Open field for the third time in his career.

Smith, a two-time DP World Tour champion, will join the world’s best at Oakmont Country Club from June 12–15.

Close behind, Guido Migliozzi of Italy shot 68-67 to finish at 9-under par. A four-time DP World Tour winner, Migliozzi returns to the U.S. Open, looking to build on his T4 finish in 2021 at Torrey Pines.

Also finishing on 9-under and qualifying for their first Major Championships were Frédéric Lacroix (France) and Joakim Lagergren (Sweden).

Sam Bairstow of England secured his spot with a clutch birdie on the final hole, reaching 8-under and avoiding a playoff. Bairstow also qualified through Walton Heath in 2024.

Six players tied at 7-under, forcing a playoff for the final three spots. Edoardo Molinari, Jacques Kruyswijk, and Andrea Pavan advanced after two extra holes. Matthew Jordan and Robin Williams earned alternate positions.

2025 U.S. Open Qualifiers from Walton Heath:

  • Jordan Smith (ENG) – 10 under

  • Guido Migliozzi (ITA) – 9 under

  • Frédéric Lacroix (FRA) – 9 under

  • Joakim Lagergren (SWE) – 9 under

  • Edoardo Molinari (ITA) – 7 under (via playoff)

  • Jacques Kruyswijk (RSA) – 7 under (via playoff)

  • Andrea Pavan (ITA) – 7 under (via playoff)

These eight golfers will now prepare for the 125th U.S. Open, set to take place at the historic Oakmont Country Club, one of golf’s most iconic venues

Player quotes:

Jordan Smith (ENG)
I’m really, really happy. I’m really looking forward to that week. I’ve heard it’s going to be absolutely brutal. They don’t want any under-par scores winning, so it’s going to be good fun, a good test, and I’m just really happy with how I played today and how the game helped me out.

I’ve been playing well over the last couple of months. It was just about pulling it all together on the right week. Today was probably one of my best putting displays in a long time, which always helps, but I did feel confident coming into the day.

I can’t remember anything about 2016, when Oakmont last hosted the U.S. Open, because my memory is terrible. I’m going to try and get there fairly early, have a couple of practice rounds, because it’s going to be tricked up with the rough. You’ll need to know where to miss if you end up in it, and there will probably be some slick putts. I’m just really looking forward to it.

Guido Migliozzi (ITA)
It’s been a long day and a battle—a bit of a roller coaster on the course—but overall it’s been great. I’m pleased I could do it and go back to one of my favourite tournaments.

I was a little upset after the bogey-bogey finish to the first 18 holes, but that happens. You can get good breaks or bad breaks. We still had another 18 to play, and I started the second round strong at four under after four holes. That gave me confidence to keep going, even though there was pressure. It was a great day.

I’ve been driving the ball very well today. On the 18th in the second round, all I tried to do was reach the bunker. With that front pin, it wouldn’t have been a hard shot from there. I missed the bunker left, but hit a great chip and was very happy.

I’ve never played Oakmont, but I’ve heard the atmosphere and course conditions are incredible. I’m so happy to be going back. Hopefully I’ll enjoy it and go as low as I can.

Honestly, days like today feel like practice rounds too. It’s great to see where your game stands. I shot nine under and made it through, but looking back, I made some very stupid mistakes. Every golf day is a learning day, and today was a good one.

Frédéric Lacroix (FRA)
I’m pretty happy with two good scores today. It was a long day, so I’m glad it’s over. You try to save energy where you can, avoid bogeys, stay out of trouble, and hope a few putts drop. Then you just see where you end up.

It played pretty dry, so even small misses could lead to big trouble. I mostly stayed out of it. I missed a few chances, but had no doubles—just a couple of bogeys, nothing too bad. I’m happy with how I played.

I’ve heard Oakmont is one of the best tests in golf, and the set-up is supposed to be really tough. I don’t know the course and I haven’t played much in the U.S., so it will be a nice experience.
