Gumberg Extends Lead at Hainan Classic as Weekend Battle Looms

American golfer Jordan Gumberg strengthened his position at the top of the leaderboard, taking a two-shot lead into the weekend at the Hainan Classic presented by MAEXTRO, held at Mission Hills Haikou. Continuing his strong opening-round form, Gumberg produced a composed and clinical performance to reach 14-under-par after two rounds.

The 30-year-old followed up his first-round lead with a six-under-par 66, highlighted by seven birdies and just one bogey. Taking advantage of calmer morning conditions, he built momentum early with four birdies on the front nine of the Vintage Course before adding three more coming home. His steady approach and consistent putting have positioned him firmly in contention for his second title on the DP World Tour.

Spain’s Jorge Campillo sits in outright second place at 12-under-par, two shots behind the leader. Backing up an impressive opening round, Campillo carded a 67 on Friday, recovering from an inconsistent start with a strong finish that included five birdies on his inward nine at the Blackstone Course.

A competitive chasing pack is led by South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence and Dylan Frittelli, who share third place at 10-under-par. They are closely followed by South Korea’s Taehoon Ok, who sits one shot further back, keeping the leaderboard tightly contested heading into the final two rounds.

A large group of players remains within striking distance at eight-under-par, including China’s Wenyi Ding, Yanhan Zhou, Bo Jin, and Bowen Xiao, alongside Scotland’s Euan Walker, Portugal’s Daniel Rodrigues, and England’s Andy Sullivan. Their presence ensures a competitive field as the tournament enters its decisive stage.

The opening two rounds were played across the Blackstone and Vintage courses at Mission Hills Haikou, with players alternating between layouts. While the Vintage Course offered slightly more scoring opportunities, the Blackstone Course has presented a sterner challenge, setting the stage for the final rounds which will be played exclusively on Blackstone.

Reflecting on his performance, Gumberg credited patience and consistency as key factors behind his strong position. He noted the importance of adapting to the differing characteristics of the two courses, particularly the smaller and more undulating greens on the Vintage layout. Despite leaving a few putts on the course, he expressed confidence in his overall game heading into the weekend.

Campillo, meanwhile, highlighted the challenges posed by windy conditions and the demanding nature of the Blackstone Course. His consistent ball-striking and improved putting have kept him firmly in contention, while acknowledging the importance of sharpening his short game in the closing rounds.

Among the chasing group, Frittelli emphasized the value of patience and composure, noting that maintaining a calm mindset proved crucial despite challenging conditions. Lawrence also expressed satisfaction with his steady performance, particularly his solid putting, as he looks to build momentum over the weekend.

A pro-am competition held alongside the main event added further dimension to the tournament, with Zi Wang and Quianzhou Wang claiming victory at an impressive 32-under-par.

As one of the flagship events on the DP World Tour, the Hainan Classic continues to showcase global talent competing across world-class venues. With the final two rounds set to unfold on the demanding Blackstone Course, the tournament remains finely poised, with Gumberg holding the advantage but a strong field ready to challenge.

Heading into the weekend, the focus will remain on whether Gumberg can maintain his composure and convert his lead, or if the chasing pack can close the gap and create another dramatic finish on the DP World Tour.
