Sweden’s Oliver Gillberg and American Alex Goff share the lead after the second round of the DP World Tour Final Stage Qualifying School at INFINITUM, both sitting at 11-under-par for the week.
Gillberg fired a flawless five-under 66 on the Lakes Course, while Goff carded a four-under 67 on the same layout to move one clear of Italy’s Gregorio de Leo, South Africa’s Zander Lombard, Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Follett-Smith, and England’s Matthew Baldwin.
Starting on the 10th hole, Gillberg made the turn at two under before catching fire on the front nine, adding three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the 3rd. Fresh from winning Second Stage last week, the 29-year-old Swede is determined to maintain his momentum as he chases his long-awaited DP World Tour card.
“I’ve been thinking about a DP World Tour card for 18 years,” said Gillberg. “I just tried to stay focused on the golf shots and the feelings in my swing. Everyone knows what’s at stake, but I’ll just keep doing my best and enjoy it.”
Goff, meanwhile, stayed patient through a par-filled front nine before stringing together four birdies in five holes. A bogey on the 15th was quickly erased with a birdie at the last, closing out a composed round to match Gillberg atop the leaderboard.
“It’s been quite the journey through all three stages,” said Goff, who is playing in Europe for the first time. “I didn’t have my best stuff early, but one birdie changed my rhythm and got things going. I just need to keep my head down and keep playing the golf I know I can.”
The round of the day belonged to Daan Huizing of the Netherlands, who shot a sizzling seven-under 65 on the Hills Course to climb into a tie for seventh at nine under alongside Brazil’s Frederico Biondi Figueiredo.
Round three of the six-round marathon gets underway tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. local time, with Gillberg, Goff, and Baldwin teeing off together at 11:12 a.m. on the Hills Course.
