Discipline, Direction And Development Captain Kader Mahmood Chowdhury’s Blueprint for BGCC
Captain Kader Mahmood Chowdhury is a disciplined organizer and a hands-on leader who sees golf as both a sport and a system; one that needs structure, standards, and steady investment in people. In this conversation, he outlines how Bhatiary Golf & Country Club is being shaped through course stewardship, tournament governance, and a clear pipeline for junior development.
As Golf Captain of Bhatiary Golf & Country Club, how do you define your core responsibilities?
As Golf Captain, my responsibilities are wide-ranging and hands-on. I oversee course standards, coordinate closely with the grounds team, supervise the KD ball boys’ welfare and discipline, and ensure the smooth operation of club and international tournaments. Alongside operational duties, I have established a Golf Academy and formed a structured Junior Division. The role demands continuous attention; if you are committed, there is always work to be done for the betterment of the club.
What leadership principles from your military career do you apply in managing club activities and tournaments?
Leadership and administrative discipline are ingrained through military training. At the Bangladesh Military Academy, we are taught accountability, punctuality, and decision-making under pressure. Those principles guide me every day. Any organization requires strong administration, and I apply the same structured discipline here at Bhatiary.
How do you ensure discipline, etiquette, and competitive fairness within the club?
Discipline is foundational. I served as Vice Captain for six years before becoming Golf Captain, and during that time I focused heavily on discipline and welfare. Our junior players follow a strict routine: arriving at 6 a.m., engaging in running, practice, and physical exercise until 9 a.m. They are taught punctuality, respect, communication skills, and proper conduct with playing partners. Etiquette and fairness are non-negotiable elements of the game.
How would you evaluate the current standard of the course and tournament culture at Bhatiary?
Bhatiary is one of the most naturally beautiful and challenging courses in Bangladesh. Surrounded by hills and designed organically, it offers a unique playing experience. Many foreign players appreciate its quality. Our greens are among the finest in the country, and the fairways remain in excellent condition. Continuous communication with the grounds team ensures high standards are maintained at all times.
My long-term vision is to institutionalize the Golf Academy and integrate it into a broader national structure. Bhatiary should serve as a recognized center for training, producing competitive golfers with proper academic and financial support.
What strategic initiatives are you prioritizing to elevate the club’s competitive profile nationally?
One important change I implemented was shifting irrigation from daytime to nighttime. Daytime watering led to significant water loss due to heat and wind. Night irrigation allows water to remain in the soil longer, improving grass health and maintaining green fairways even during the dry season. Beyond course management, strengthening the academy and junior development program remains a central priority.
How important is structured tournament scheduling in strengthening member engagement?
Structured tournament scheduling creates rhythm within a club. Regular competitions keep members motivated and engaged. A disciplined calendar enhances participation, sharpens competitiveness, and fosters a vibrant club culture.
What steps are being taken to attract new members and encourage regular participation?
Maintaining high course standards, organizing well-managed tournaments, and ensuring smooth club operations naturally attract new members. A disciplined and professional environment encourages regular participation.
How is the club supporting junior golfers and nurturing the next generation of talent?
We currently have 12 junior players in our division. Eight receive monthly sponsorship support arranged externally, while the remaining four are supported directly by the club. This financial backing allows them to focus on development rather than financial pressures. We also provide technical training using projection tools to analyze and correct swings. Academic and monetary support are both essential for sustained growth.
As Golf Captain, my responsibilities are wide-ranging and hands-on. I oversee course standards, coordinate closely with the grounds team, supervise the KD ball boys’ welfare and discipline, and ensure the smooth operation of club and international tournaments
In your view, how can regional clubs like Bhatiary contribute to the overall growth of golf in Bangladesh?
Regional clubs must build strong junior systems and structured academies. Bhatiary aims to become a training hub for surrounding clubs in the Chattogram region. By strengthening grassroots development and connecting with national frameworks, regional clubs can significantly contribute to the country’s overall progress
When did your journey with golf begin, and what keeps you connected to the game?
My golf journey began in 2013–14. Initially, I took up the sport to maintain fitness after retirement from the army. Over time, it became a passion. Even after a difficult round, one good shot inspires you to return the next day. That motivation is deeply personal.

How does golf complement leadership and personal discipline in your life?
Golf demands self-discipline and self-motivation. The course challenges patience, focus, and strategic thinking—qualities closely aligned with leadership. It strengthens character.
What aspect of the game do you find most challenging and rewarding?
Handling pressure is challenging, especially for younger players. However, the reward lies in steady improvement. Consistency and persistence eventually produce results.
What is your long-term vision for Bhatiary Golf & Country Club?
My long-term vision is to institutionalize the Golf Academy and integrate it into a broader national structure. Bhatiary should serve as a recognized center for training, producing competitive golfers with proper academic and financial support.
Where do you see Bangladesh golf heading over the next decade?
Facilities and academy structures have improved significantly compared to a decade ago. With growing junior divisions and stronger organizational systems, Bangladesh golf is moving forward steadily. Continued discipline and structured investment will elevate standards further.
What message would you like to share with young golfers and aspiring leaders?
Stay disciplined. Remain consistent. Progress may not come immediately, but sustained effort always yields results. Keep working, and success will follow.
