China will bid for a maiden victory at the World Amateur Team Championships this week, banking on unity, trust and proven success on tour to mount a strong challenge for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Singapore’s Tanah Merah Country Club.
Led by former world number one Feng Shanshan, the trio of Zhou Shiyuan, Ren Yijia and Xu Ying carry high expectations into the 31st edition of the biennial event from October 1-4. Between them, they have collected seven CLPG Tour victories and boast significant international experience.
Zhou, currently ranked 26th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, exuded confidence in her team. “Cohesion and trust are key to victory. We all know each other well, and with our long drives, accurate iron play, and precise putting, I believe we can achieve outstanding results,” she said.
Ren, fresh off her dramatic win at the Zhangjiagang Shuangshan Challenge with a final-hole birdie, echoed the sentiment. “Winning has given me a lot of confidence. With good teamwork, I believe this championship will go smoothly for us,” she said. Xu, ranked 30th, added: “The most important thing is unity—trusting one another completely. Together, we’ve already won seven CLPG Tour titles, which really boosts my confidence.”
The players are leaving no detail unchecked, preparing specifically for Singapore’s conditions adjusting to grass types, green speeds, bunker textures and heat management. Zhou underlined the importance of mental toughness: “Competing away from home, we may face different pressures, but maintaining composure and focus on each shot will be crucial.”
The Espirito Santo Trophy, conducted by the International Golf Federation and hosted by the Singapore Golf Association, features teams of three women playing 72 holes of stroke play over four days, with the two best scores from each round counting toward the team total. This year, the Tampines Course at Tanah Merah will play to a par-72 over 6,453 yards.
With belief in their talent and strength in unity, China’s young stars are aiming to carve their names into history.
