Md. Mahbubur Rahman, a seasoned banker and passionate golfer, has been with City Bank PLC for around fourteen years, currently serving as the Additional Managing Director and CFO. Since 2006, he has been a member of Kurmitola Golf Club, balancing his demanding banking career with his love for golf. Golf is not only his primary physical activity but also a source of stress relief, allowing him to maintain peak performance in his professional life.
Could you tell us about your banking journey and how golf fits into your daily life?
I am currently serving as the Additional Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of City Bank PLC, and I have been with the bank for more than twelve years. I have also been a member of Kurmitola Golf Club since 2006. Golf is one of my greatest passions. I usually play early in the morning before heading to the office. It is my primary physical activity and an effective way to manage stress in a demanding profession like banking. I have a family with three children, and two of them also play golf. My youngest son Arib now has a lower handicap than mine and has already won several trophies, which makes me extremely proud.
When did you start playing golf and who introduced you to the game?
I started golfing in 2006. One of my seniors, Tipu Bhai, who is also a chartered accountant, introduced me to the game. He later moved to Australia but continues to play golf there as well.
Golf is a game of strategy and precision. How does that translate into your role in banking?
There is a deep connection between golf and banking. Every shot in golf requires planning, risk assessment, and execution, which is very similar to decision-making in banking. In my professional life, I constantly evaluate stakeholders, risks, resources, and impact before taking any decision. Golf has helped me think more clearly, plan more strategically, and execute with discipline.
I always encourage young people to play golf whenever I get the opportunity. I strongly believe golf can play a significant role in shaping discipline, leadership and mental strength.
What does your regular golfing routine look like?
I play three to four days a week. Since I live close to a golf course, it is easier for me to maintain this routine. On weekends, I usually play both days. Even with work pressure, I always try to practice regularly.

How has golf helped you in professional networking?
Golf is an excellent platform for networking. On the golf course, I meet senior professionals and business leaders in a relaxed environment. It allows meaningful conversations and long term relationships to develop naturally. As a banker at City Bank, it also allows me to represent the brand with dignity and build trust within the golfing community.
What is your most memorable moment in golf?
Winning the President’s Cup at Kurmitola Golf Club last year remains one of my most special memories. It is the most prestigious amateur tournament, and that victory was deeply meaningful to me after years of playing competitively.
How do you encourage others to take up golf?
I always encourage young people to play golf whenever I get the opportunity. I strongly believe golf can play a significant role in shaping discipline, leadership, and mental strength. I also support professional golfers and the Bangladesh Professional Golf Association whenever possible.
Golf has taught me the importance of continuous improvement, strategic thinking, patience, and consistent execution. These lessons have directly helped me in managing complex responsibilities in banking. Golf has also allowed me to build valuable client relationships in a natural and respectful environment.
